Optus Killarney Tri - A big day out!

11 Dec 2022 by Ian Barnes

We have just wrapped up from the Optus Killarney Tri, and what a big day it was. We had 121 people get involved across all of our events today, which was a stellar turn out.

Firstly – to give a big congratulations to everyone who completed their first triathlon today! How good did that feel, so many smiles across the line which was fantastic to see. We had 24 participants in our short course non-competitive event today, a mix of experienced triathletes coming out of hiatus, first timers and some team challenges going on. Well done to everyone. Proving the Short Course is for anyone, we even had a TT bike with race wheels out on course today 😉

Into the sprint distance events – in our women’s category, Gab Lanman took the honors today, with Liv Morgan in hot pursuit. Karen Benson back from injury took out an impressive third place. The men’s was a hot contest from the start today, the lead changing between Joey Coote and Adam Cashmore, Cashy able to catch up and pip him in the last lap of the run to cross the line first. Brett Trace a regular to our club events crossed the line in 3rd position. Its always great to see the Teams out on course and today “Trifecta” came across the line in first place, “Kelly’s Heroes” across in second, followed in by “Norm and Libby”. Well done to all 5 teams who took on the challenge. To see all the full results of todays Open events, click onto the Results Tab.

Following on, we then had 43 kids complete the tri events today – the Under 7’s kicking off first, with the littles getting confidence out on course with each event they return to do. Then moving onto the 7-9s and 10-12s out on the road and challenging themselves with a run around the oval to finish off. It was great to see so many of our previous U7s from last season stepping up and mixing it with the 7-9 kids this year in the ‘big’ event. Thank you to Optus Yes Warrnambool for the cute Netflix bags, the kids were chuffed – and to Saputo for everyone’s favorite flavoured milks to rehydrate.

We want to say a big thank you to John and the crew from the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club for their support of our swimmers today – with lots of first timers in the water it was very appreciated. Thank you to Optus for their ongoing support of our club and this event and to Moyne Shire Council for their assistance and support in allowing us to host this event. We also thank Optus, By liv., Quick Spin Laundry and Rebel sport for today’s fantastic spot prizes, and to our other club sponsors Saputo, Ultimate Performance & Rehab – Exercise Physiology and Pilates, Central Storage, McLaren Hunt Financial Group and WDEA for their ongoing support which helps us to keep entry fees to our events low.

Thank you to Bakers Delight Warrnambool CBD for their support of our fundraiser BBQ today – we had some hungry participants and spectators today, we sold out of 200 snags! Rumour has it they went down a treat 😊

Lastly but by far not least – THANK-YOU to Peter Gaffy for his many hours of work behind the scenes as Race Director for today and to Pete and Donna for guiding the kids events. These events are a big team effort so thank you to all the Committee members and Volunteers who helped out today. Events like Killarney are a massive undertaking for our small club and are only possible due to everyone chipping in when called on – so thank you all legends.

We look forward to seeing everyone again soon – don’t forget to pencil our Mini Series in January, our Foreshore Tri (5th Feb) and Super Tri at Killarney (5th March) into your calendars.
