Wild Weather didn't stop the Aquathon Fun

30 Dec 2020 by Ian Barnes

Our annual ‘summer’ Aquathon was run last night in some trying conditions for competitors – with the wind blowing up and some choppy swimming conditions out the back.

Impressively 67 participants still turned up to go around the course, made up of 37 individuals and 15 teams of 2 – one member the swimmer, one the runner. Kicking off with a 1km run along the beach on the sand, up past worm bay and back again – followed by a 150m (+ some whoops) swim in the ocean. The aim was to go around the circuit as many times as you could, or you wanted to over the course of the hour. There was some strong competition at the front of the packs in both the individual and teams categories which is always hotly contested!

In our teams division we had ‘Two Jocks’ (Isaac Jones and Jock Blair) across the line first with 9 laps, followed by ‘H & L’ (Heath Mack and Leigh Kane) across with 8 laps and ‘Team Pavilion’ (Jon Watson and Naticia Varley) coming in third place on 8 laps also. In the men’s individuals we saw Todd Dymke dominate in the swim legs coming across with 8 laps, followed closely by Ruben de Silva-Smith on 8 laps, and in third place Jason Morgan made his return for the season with 7 laps. The ladies division saw Kiarna Murfett across in first place with 7 laps, followed in second place by Sara Shiells on 6 laps, and also on 6 laps in third place was Liv Morgan. What a great day out for the Morgan family! Everyone who went around the course yesterday , should give themselves a big pat on the back – it was great to see all the smiles and everyone having fun. Fingers crossed everyone had a long hot shower when they got home to defrost and warm up!

Big shout out to our volunteers for this event, Kate Haberfield (Race director – thanks for all your hard work setting up this event for us Kate), Scott Barclay, Di Cooper, Jen Dowie, Lauren Edney and Nic Barnes. Shout out to Kathy Mcdonald for photographing our event. And to all those who helped to set up and pack up (in the rain) – thanks to all, many hands make light work. We also thank the team from the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club for giving up their time and for keeping our swimmers safe out in the water today.

Our clubs sponsors help us to bring you these events – Saputo Dairy Australia, Optus, UPR, McLaren Hunt Financial Group, Central Storage, WDEA, Warrnambool City Council and Moyne Shire – so we give them a big cheer out and thanks.
